The close-knit town of Benton, population 16,000, is abuzz with excitement about the $4.85 million win claimed Friday by Bruce and Carol “Guinnette” Maynard. Guinnette’s ticket, purchased at American Trading Post, 5015 Hwy 411 in Benton, matched all six Lotto Plus numbers drawn on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Bruce, a former truck driver, said the excitement of neighbors and others in the community is much greater than their own. “I was talking to one of my neighbors and he kept screaming and hollering and I wondered, why is he doing that?” he said with a laugh.
Not that the Maynards aren’t thrilled—they are just keeping calm. In fact, Bruce and Guinnette appeared to be just as interested in discussing the University of Tennessee head football coach news as they were the jackpot win.
“I told myself we were going to win, and here we are,” said Bruce. The Maynards don’t have definite plans for their prize other than to “use it wisely” and take their family of three children and four grandchildren on a cruise.
Tuesday’s jackpot was the second largest in Lotto Plus history. The largest jackpot of $11.7 million was won on Jan. 20, 2009.
The Tennessee Education Lottery operates entirely from the revenue it generates through the sale of its products. Net proceeds from sales of Lottery tickets, currently averaging over $5 million per week, fund specific education programs, including college scholarships, pre-kindergarten and after-school programs. Since the Tennessee Lottery began selling tickets on Jan. 20, 2004, it has raised more than $1.5 billion for these programs, and returned nearly $3.4 billion in prizes and more than $375 million in retailer commissions.
