On the heels of a record-breaking July comes news of a $4.9 million HOT LOTTO jackpot winner in Knoxville from last night’s drawing. Unique to other prizes, the withholding taxes are paid on the cash jackpot.

The Tennessee Education Lottery also reports a record kick-off to its new fiscal year. July sales of $137 million were 14.8 percent higher than the prior year and the highest for any July since inception.

Additional details about the big jackpot win will be released as they are available.

This is the second HOT LOTTO jackpot prize won in Tennessee since the game launched here May 12, 2013. Two friends from Dyersburg won a $2.2 million jackpot October 13, 2013.

HOT LOTTO is a multi-jurisdictional drawing-style game featuring all cash (not annuitized) jackpots starting at $1 million. Tickets cost $1 each, with a “Sizzler” option that triples all non-jackpot prizes and costs an extra $1. Drawings are held every Wednesday and Saturday night.

To play HOT LOTTO, players select (or “Quick Pick”) five numbers from 1 through 47, plus one additional number (called the “Hot Ball”) from 1 through 19 drawn from a separate pool. Eight non-jackpot prize levels range from $2 to $30,000, all of which are tripled if the player chooses the “Sizzler” option. Overall odds of winning a prize are 1:17.
