Nita and Merwin Scruggs accept their check from Sidney Chambers, Lottery EVP of Sales & Marketing

NASHVILLE - Merwin and Nita Scruggs have two million and one reasons to explain why Friday the 13th is their favorite of all days: The first is because it’s the day they were married nearly 40 years ago; the second is because it’s the day they purchased a Powerball Power Play ticket worth $2 million!

The Murfreesboro couple claimed the $2 million prize on Monday, April 16, at the Tennessee Lottery’s Nashville headquarters. The ticket, purchased at Discount Tobacco, 2510 B South Church Street, matched all five white numbers correctly, which is usually a $200,000 win. However, since Merwin added Power Play to the ticket and the multiplier for Saturday night’s drawing was “10,” the prize decupled into $2 million!

“We still can’t believe it,” said Merwin, a manager at Graves Metal Products, Inc., in Shelbyville. “We didn’t sleep at all last night.”

Merwin, 59, and Nita are the first Powerball players to win this prize level, which is available only during April as part of a special Power Play 10X Promotion, which replaces one of the “5s” on the Power Play wheel with a “10.”

The couple plans to share their winnings with their two sons and 10 grandchildren, and say they are happy to be part of generating dollars for education.

The Scruggs also said they have no immediate plans to retire. “We wouldn’t leave anyone short-handed!” said Merwin.

Congratulations and best wishes to the Scruggs!

The Tennessee Lottery began selling its first tickets on January 20, 2004. As of March 31, 2007, the Lottery has raised more than $842.6 million to fund specific education programs, including college scholarships, pre-kindergarten and after-school programs.
