Everybody wins with the Tennessee Lottery ... especially students and families.
Beginning in 2004, Lottery-funded scholarships became available to Tennessee students attending public or private colleges or universities across the state. The criteria are straightforward:
Graduating high-school seniors must have a 3.0 grade point average or score a 21 on the ACT in order to receive up to $4,000 in scholarship funds per academic year. Additional support is available for high-school students with outstanding academic credentials. Once in college, students must maintain a B average.
In addition to scholarships, lottery-funded grants are available to students attending technical schools.
All scholarships and grants are administered by the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation, using funds deposited into an education account by the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation. For more information about Lottery scholarships and grants please visit www.collegepaystn.com or call (615) 741-1346.
Lottery revenues also benefit pre-kindergarten and after-school programs. Information about funds for after-school programs may be obtained by visiting http://tennessee.gov/education/learningsupport/afterschool/index.shtml or calling 615-253-6037. Pre-K information may be obtained by contacting the State Office of Early Learning at 615-253-3182 or at http://www.tennessee.gov/education/prek/.

Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin has over 850 Tennessee Lottery funded HOPE Scholarship recipients. Two of those recipients are Mary Beth Cliburn and Jared Slayton.
A 2005 graduate of Westmoreland high school, Mary Beth Cliburn chose Volunteer State Community College for their accredited radiologic technology program. After completing her two-year studies, Mary Beth plans to work at one of the local hospitals assisting patients. “I love helping people,” says Mary Beth, “and the opportunity to receive a Lottery funded HOPE Scholarship will help that dream come true.”
Jared Slayton, a 2006 graduate of Gallatin High School, chose Volunteer State Community College to begin his higher education. Future plans include attending Tennessee Technological University to pursue a B.A. in mechanical engineering.
Jared qualified for a Lottery funded Hope Scholarship and is grateful for the financial assistance. With four years of tuition ahead of him, the money is helpful, but Jared has discovered an additional benefit. “The HOPE Scholarship has encouraged me to stay focused on my education in order to maintain the required GPA to continue my eligibility for the program,” says Jared. And with great grades, his educational future looks bright!
